1. I can explain the purpose of the Great Wall of China. The Great Wall of China was built by Emperor Ch’In (Qin) to keep out invaders from the North. 2. I can identify the accomplishments of Shi Huangdi. Shi Huangdi is also known as Emperor Ch’In (Qin). He built the Great Wall of China, roads throughout empire, unified the country, and instituted a common currency. He was buried with 6000+ Terra Cotta warriors. 3. I can identify China’s three major religions. Confucianism Founder = Confucius Beliefs Based on the teachings of Confucius where family plays a central role and one acts according to their role in society. Loyalty and respect toward your family, is central to his teaching. Education is valued as is teaches values and focuses on the duties that each person must obey to achieve peace, harmony and order to society. Buddhism Founder = Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha “Enlightened One”) Beliefs Based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama where the goal of each person is to live a life of moderation (the eightfold path) to free themselves of the suffering of the world and to be released from the cycle of death and rebirth in order to reach Nirvana. This religion originated in India, but moved with traders on the Silk Road and became a central religion in China. Daoism Founder = Laozi (Lao Tzi) Beliefs Goal was to follow the Dao which is the rhythm of the universe. Daoists studied nature to harmonize with this rhythm. They believe that to have balance with the Yin and Yang you will achieve peace and harmony in your life. 4. I can identify the importance of family in Chinese society. Oldest male is central authority figure in a family. Women are lower status but still treated with respect. Extended families often live together 5. I can re-create “The Rise and Fall of Chinese Dynasties” diagram. 6. I can define “Mandate of Heaven”. Chinese believed rulers came to power due to destiny which supported a leader’s right to rule. 7. I can identify “China’s Sorrow”. The Huang He or Yellow river brings life to the land but can flood as often as every two years and claim thousands of lives. 8. I can define loess and recognize it’s affect on China’s agriculture. Like everywhere in the world, civilization developed in China along rivers. When rivers flood it deposits fertile soil called loess from the Huang He (Yellow) River which allows people to farm. 9. I can explain why the Chinese refer to their land as “The Middle Kingdom”. Due to these Geographic barriers China was isolated from the world: Mountains = Himalayas (Mt. Everest is the highest point on Earth) Deserts = Gobi and Taklamakan Seas = South China, East China, and Yellow 10. I can identify the leaders and policies of China’s Communist government. Leader = Mao Zedong came to power by creating a communist government in 1949 Communes = The Communist government confiscated all land and put people to work on land where communities lived and worked One Child Policy = Created to slow population growth Great Leap Forward = 1950’s, designed to increase production in farms and factories. Cultural Revolution = 1966, designed to erase ties to the past. 11. I can identify the location of the Himalaya Mountains, Gobi Desert, Plateau of Tibet and the North China Plain on a map of China. 12. I can explain China’s population density. People live near water for trade and soil. Uninhabited places would be where people cannot live due to the area being too dry. 13. I practiced with the Timeline at the bottom of the pages 630-631 Yes or Not yet 14. I can explain the events surrounding the tragedy in Japan in 2011. An 8.9 magnitude earthquake happened off the coast of Japan in 2011 causing a tsunami that destroyed many of the coastal cities and creating large amounts of debris. The earthquake also caused a nuclear reactor to overheat when the fail safes failed to initialize. The Japanese government has taken steps to prevent a reactor meltdown, but radiation has been steadily leaking from the core of the plant and an evacuation zone has been established. 15. I can explain the recent controversy surrounding North Korea. North Korea had previously negotiated with the United States to send food aid to their starving citizens with the condition that they would scrap their nuclear missile program. North Korea then built a rocket that many suspected was capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, so the United States cancelled the planned food aid. The North Korean missile was launched, but crashed in the Pacific Ocean after only two minutes in the air. 16. I can identify the religious leader who recently resigned. Pope Benedict XVI resigned and Pope Francis is now the new leader of the Catholic Church. 17. I can explain the issues in Tibet. Many Tibetans have moved from China to India because of their human rights being violated. When the Tibet refugees move to India they stay at some special villages that are setup for them to live together. The issues are still unresolved. |
